My Stance on AI Usage, and how I use it

Published 17 October 2026

With endless amounts of morons online using AI to do literally everything for them, I think it's important that I outline where my boundaries are with this divisive technology and exactly how I use it.
I'll try to keep this as straightforward as I can. Everyone has their own opinions on acceptable usage, here I will lay out mine.

What I think is unacceptable AI usage

  • Image, video, and music generation, etc.
I see no utility for these whatsoever, and in my opinion these technologies should simply not exist.
  • Use in fan translations, etc.
Translation/localization should be left up to humans who can actually understand the language and check the work.
  • Having it do all the work
In my opinion, using AI to this extreme is wrong. We do what we do for the journey to get there, not the destination or product. If it is to be used at all, it should only be used in an assistive capacity. Using it as a magic "win instantly" button does nothing but encourage laziness. Anything it produces should also always be thoroughly tested and inspected, subject to the same scrutiny that anything made by humans would receive.
  • Frivolous/careless AI use (i.e. slop)
See the mass proliferation of rushed, poor quality "slopcomps" and vibe coded ports for instance, something that ends up being completely useless to anyone, is often generated merely for clout online, and usually ends up being forgotten and left to rot shortly after. If AI is to be used at all, it should be on something that will be useful and productive, such as tools, not massproduced slop.
Also, just because you are the boss of the group doesn't mean you can just throw everyone's hard work into the slop machine without consideration for others' opinions. You know who you are.

What I think is acceptable AI usage, which is how I use it

  • Learning and understanding
For example, asking questions like "How do I do XYZ?", or questions about how something works.
  • Tools
I find AI useful to generate small scale tools or scripts, usually for some kind of data processing or conversion.
  • Boilerplate
When I am working with win32 for instance, I might ask for a simple skeleton function for a window that collects text box input, and then flesh out that template into exactly what I need.

In Summary

Video games are in fact art, and the design and programming of the actual game itself should always be done by humans.
The work of the machine will never match that of humans who care and know what they're doing.
I am okay with AI helping with smaller things in the background, such as with tools that can help in making the project a little easier, while not placing the entire workload on the machine.
AI should never be used to allow you to be lazy and do everything for you, or as an automatic win button to let you carelessly rush something out, if it is to be used at all.
